Mode of Study : Full Time Expected Completion Date : September 2010
Supervisor(s) : Prof. Henry Patterson (School of Economics and Politics) and Prof. Arthur Aughey (School of Economics and Politics)
Title of Project : Unionism and Human Rights in Northern Ireland
Project Description :

Modern human rights discourse, as it has evolved nationally, internationally and locally since the end of the Second World War has remained largely alien to the Unionist, Loyalist and Protestant community in Northern Ireland.

The aim of this research is to investigate and analyse, within a theoretical and practical framework, the perception that despite recent developments in the area of human rights in Northern Ireland Unionism remains extremely sceptical of human rights discourse.

I will investigate the attitudes of Unionists towards human rights generally and in particular towards the process of drafting a bill of rights for Northern Ireland examining whether the reasons for this are grounded in Unionism’s practical experience of rights discourse in Northern Ireland or whether it is has a deeper ideological basis.
