Title of Project :
Re-examining the Historiography of the Irish Poor Law debate 1833-1838.
Project Description : My research is focused on the Irish Poor Law debate between 1833 and 1838. I am particularly interested in how this debate has been recorded in the history of social policy literature in recent decades. I have returned to a lot of original primary source material during my research including all the Parliamentary Bills, Papers and Acts, and also gathered together information on how the newspapers and Journals of the time recorded and commented on events. My main source for my re-examination is the private correspondence of the key players in the Irish Poor Law story that I have obtained through visits to the National Library in Dublin and the National Archives and British Library in London. I am to revise and correct errors contained in the current accounts of this period using never before researched material particularly personal correspondence among the key figures both inside and outside government at the time.
