Title of Project : Interface Areas In Belfast: A Case Study

Project Description :

To determine the on-going nature, volume and direction of interface violence in Northern Ireland or a particular arena therein. To analyse the policies directed to controlling and removing such violence at various policy scales. This study will also look at the role of the community organisation, Suffolk Lenadoon Interface Group (SLIG) in relation to helping to create and provide shared space, through the Stewartstown Road Regeneration Project. Little substantial and in-depth work on interface areas and the effect they have on the residents. Community groups in Belfast interface areas Report feeling deeply frustrated and alienated with the government. 

Other Information
The aim of the project is to answer the following two research questions:

  1. Does regeneration of interface areas empower communities socially and economically?
  1. What role if any has government at local and national level in facilitating any such regeneration?
The secondary objectives are:
  • Identify how interface areas disadvantage communities.
  • Highlight need for appropriate structures inside and outside Government to manage processes of change in interface areas.
  • Help develop a more comprehensive and long-term strategy for interface areas across the city of Belfast.
  • Examine any policy progression that has been made in relation to this area
