Research Projects Available for Postgraduate (PHD) Study

UNIT OF ASSESSMENT 39 - Politics and International Studies

Project Outline

The transformation of violent conflict
The past decade has witnessed a growing interest in the concept of conflict transformation. Indeed eminent peace researchers such as Johan Galtung and John Paul Lederach have made the idea central to their definitions of peace. However, in many ways, the concept remains an ill-defined idea and more empirical and theoretical work is still needed in this area to inter alia

  • critically assess the theoretical analysis of key transformation thinkers
  • identify and evaluate key transformation strategies aimed at a number of levels in a violent conflict situation (individual, structure, culture etc.)
  • provide strong case study material to deepen our understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the transformation approach
