Anyone who wishes to teach in the state school system in the UK must have what is described as Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). As a graduate with a non-Education degree, the usual route to achieving QTS is to take a one-year Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).

All our PGCE programmes provide the first stage in learning to be an effective and competent teacher. Once you have qualified and are working as a teacher, you will be encouraged to continue learning through various forms of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) which will allow you to relate theory to your professional experience in the classroom. The School of Education at the University of Ulster offers an extensive CPD programme leading to higher degrees in education.

The University part of the PGCE training will build on the subject knowledge you already possess and will prepare you academically for teaching your subject. The second part of your training is through school experience, where you will encounter different classroom situations and work alongside experienced teachers and mentors to learn how to put your knowledge and learned teaching skills into practice.

The Post-primary PGCE programme equips you to teach your specialist subject at Key Stage 3, 4 and beyond (ages11-19). Whichever subject you choose to study the PGCE programme is designed to meet your individual needs and interests. Dependent upon your degree subject, you can choose to teach:

Art and Design
Geography
History
Home Economics
Music
Physical Education
Technology and Design
English with Drama and Media Studies

In addition to your specialist subject you will also have the opportunity to opt to study one of the following elective programmes:
Religious Education (minimum requirement: Grade C GCSE Religious Education)
Citizenship Education
Drama and Media
Personal, Health and Social Education
Special Educational Needs
