The School of Education at the University of Ulster offers a range of programmes at all levels from undergraduate to post graduate study.
The information on this page will tell you all you wish to know about our undergraduate programme.
What is this programme about?
Our undergraduate course in Education is intended to provide you with an introduction to the main concepts and concerns of contemporary educational theory and practice in both Northern Ireland, the UK and internationally.
If you are interested in taking Education as a part of your degree this is the programme for you! We offer it as a part of a combined degree programme. This means that if you choose to study Education as an undergraduate it will form one third of your degree and is considered the ‘minor’ part. . It is only offered on the Coleraine campus and can be combined with a range of cross-faculty subjects such as English, History, lanuages (French, German, Irish etc), Business, Computing, Geography, Environmental Science and so on.
If, for example you decide you wish to take English in combination with Education your degree will be named as just that- a BA in English and Education.
Who is it for?
In short, it is for anyone who is interested in studying Education!
We find however, that quite often some of our students are interested in the long term in teaching as a career and so decide to add a little Education to their degree ‘mix’ at undergraduate level before applying for a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education after they have completed their degree.
It is very important to be aware that studying Education as part of a combined degree programme does not carry Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). It takes a minimum of four years of study to become a teacher in Northern Ireland no matter what route is embarked upon. A B. Ed for example, (offered by St. Marys and Stranmillis Colleges) is a four year programme which does offer QTS. It is also important to understand that just taking Education as a minor part of your degree does not assure a place on a PGCE programme. Once you have gained your degree you must still complete the appropriate application and selection process. PGCE programmes are highly competitive and places are limited.
Other Opportunities
Education is a subject that is both academic and practical. The kind of study opportunities you will be offered will provide you with many of the skills employers seek. Developing your communication and presentational skills, using ICT in a range of practical and reflective ways, the possibility of experiencing the practicalities of the classroom environment and learning about teaching English to non-native speakers are valuable learning experiences that can translate well into different work places or into post-graduate study in related areas.
